Chrcanovic and coworkers examined the prevalence of implant fractures and risk factors leading to fracture in 2670 patients.1
They observed fractures in 0.44% of placed implants. Higher grades of titanium and increased implant diameter decreased the risk of fracture, while increased implant length, adjacency to cantilever, and bruxism increased the risk.
Overall, Nobel Biocare NobelActive implants showed significantly lower fracture rates (0%) than Straumann SLA® (2.11%) and Astra OsseoSpeedTM (1.43%) implants. Differences were reported to be especially evident in narrow-diameter implants: NobelActive implants had no fractures whereas Astra OsseoSpeed implants had a moderate fracture rate (2.10%). The authors found Straumann SLA implants “presented by far the highest fracture rate” (7.31%) of the implants studied in this publication.
